In order to rehabilitate orphaned bear cubs, Appalachian Bear Rescue must provide nutritious, natural foods.  Since a large part of a bear’s diet is fruit, a variety of fruits are provided to the young bears in our care.  This sequence of photos shows one of the “Sisters,” Loretta, eating an apple.  Since she is a yearling, it is not necessary to cut the fruit into small pieces, as is done for the smallest cubs.  She is well able to attack a whole apple, and these pictures show her making short work of one.  It didn’t take long for her to consume the entire piece of fruit, and though we don’t have a photo to show what she did next, our guess is that she went after another one!  After all, even young bears have very healthy appetites!
