Friday, January 13th was a lucky day for two little orphaned cubs that were found and admitted to ABR by Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency officers. One of the cubs was found in Sevierville; the other was found in Townsend. Both of these cubs are very much underweight at less than 20 pounds each. They will join the 16 cubs from 2011 that are spending the winter at the ABR facility.
As you can see, these two little orphans are very small when compared to the “big guys” that were released last month. And it is truly hard to believe that they are all the same age! They are almost one year old, as they were born in late January of 2011.

This just breaks my heart. Even if they were recently orphaned, wonder why they had not gained prior to that..must have had to fend for themselves a long time to be so small. God bless these babies..Thanks for caring for these babies..<3

The reason they are so underweight is that the natural foods they depend on, the soft mast (berries, fruits) in summer and hard mast (nuts and acorns) in fall were in very short supply due to weather issues last year. There are still many hungry, even starving bears out in the wild, searching for food. Those who are found and rescued will have a second chance through ABR.

I’m wondering if all these orphaned cubs have to do with mommies getting killed by hunters…..there are just so many. Poor little babies.
